The short answer
Pick Otter.ai if you want the strongest transcription-per-dollar deal: a live transcript you can read during the call, Pro at $8.33 a month billed annually, mobile recording, and mature integrations. It is the safer pick for US teams, and the only one of the two with a HIPAA option.
Pick tl;dv if you record heavily without paying (its free plan has unlimited recordings), need your data hosted in the EU, or want sales coaching without signing an Enterprise contract. Its Business plan at $29 includes playbook scoring that Otter reserves for Enterprise.
Neither one coaches you privately on how you come across. Both save their analytics for managers on their top tiers, which is why we cover a third option, Work Coach, further down.
What Otter.ai does
Otter is the incumbent. It claims more than 35 million users and roughly $100M in annual revenue as of 2026, built on a decade of transcription work. Connect your calendar and OtterPilot, its bot, joins your Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams calls as a visible participant. It transcribes live, so you can watch the transcript scroll during the meeting, then produces a summary with action items minutes after it ends.
Around that core, Otter has stacked an AI chat that answers questions across your meeting history, integrations with Slack, Salesforce, HubSpot, Notion, Jira, and Asana, a public API with an MCP server, and a 2025 suite of agents aimed at sales and recruiting teams. A desktop app added in late 2025 can record without sending the bot into the call. Its accuracy reputation is strong on clear audio and weaker with heavy accents and crosstalk.
What tl;dv does
tl;dv is the European challenger, built in Aachen, Germany, with more than 2 million users claimed. Its bot joins Zoom, Meet, and Teams calls and records full video, not just audio, with transcription in 30+ languages. Summaries are generated with Anthropic's Claude models and support custom templates, and paid plans add multi-meeting AI reports that can watch a topic across every call your team records.
The company has pivoted upmarket into sales coaching. Its Business tier includes a coaching hub with playbook adherence scoring, AI scorecards, and objection-handling analysis. Like Otter, tl;dv now also offers bot-free recording through a desktop app that captures system audio (audio only, no video), which it markets partly as an answer to Google Meet's March 2026 change flagging notetaker bots as a potential risk. Integrations run through HubSpot and Salesforce field mapping plus 5,000+ apps via Zapier, and there is an API, webhooks, and an MCP server on Pro and up.

Free plans: minutes vs retention
The free plans are shaped completely differently, and the right one depends on how you run out.
Otter's free Basic plan meters you by time: 300 transcription minutes a month with a 30-minute cap per conversation, plus three lifetime file imports. Everything you transcribe stays in your account. If you have a handful of short meetings a week, that can hold for a long while.
tl;dv meters you by intelligence instead. Recording and transcription are unlimited (with a soft cap of 40 web recordings a week), including full video, which no other free plan in this category matches. The limits sit elsewhere: recordings auto-delete after roughly three months, and AI meeting notes cover only about 10 meetings, after which you get raw transcripts without summaries. Reviewers periodically call the "unlimited" framing generous on capture and tight on everything around it.
So: heavy recorder who mostly needs the raw record, tl;dv. Light user who wants notes that stick around, Otter.
Pricing
On paid plans, Otter is meaningfully cheaper at the entry level. Otter Pro runs $8.33 per user a month billed annually ($16.99 monthly) for 1,200 minutes a month, and Business runs $19.99 annually ($30 monthly) with unlimited meeting minutes and admin controls. Sales coaching requires an Enterprise contract with custom pricing.
tl;dv Pro costs $18 per seat a month billed annually ($29 monthly) and unlocks unlimited AI notes, unlimited uploads, CRM field mapping, and its API. Business is $29 annually ($39 monthly) and adds the coaching hub, playbook monitoring, and multi-meeting AI insights. Those numbers reflect a 2026 price restructure that cut Business sharply (older comparisons still show it at $59), so treat anything citing pre-2026 tl;dv pricing as stale.
Read the two side by side and the pattern is clear: Otter charges less for transcription, tl;dv charges less for coaching. A sales team that wants scorecards pays $29 a seat at tl;dv and a custom Enterprise price at Otter.
Bots, and the slow retreat from them
Both products are bot-led. Both bots appear in the participant list, both join via calendar sync, and both companies field the same complaint: the bot showing up where nobody wanted it. Otter's version of this is well documented, with auto-joined meetings and notes auto-emailed to attendees among its most common criticisms, to the point that Bitdefender published a guide on keeping OtterPilot out. tl;dv's reviews skew more toward the opposite failure, the bot not joining or recordings erroring, plus the general awkwardness of a logo sitting in a client call.
Each now offers a bot-free path. Otter's desktop app (late 2025) records without the bot. tl;dv's desktop app captures system audio from any meeting platform, audio only, and its own help docs note that recording notifications may not appear automatically, so telling participants is on you. In both cases the bot remains the default experience, and the bot-free modes drop features like video.
Coaching and analytics: who gets them, who sees them
This is where the two diverge most on value, so precision helps.
Otter shows a speaker talk-time percentage on paid plans. Its real coaching, the Sales Agent, tracks talk-listen ratios, surfaces live prompts, extracts BANT and MEDDPICC fields, and monitors objections, and it is Enterprise-only, built for sales managers reviewing their reps. Otter has no filler-word feedback anywhere; it removes fillers from transcripts rather than measuring them.
tl;dv puts more analytics at a lower price. Business ($29) includes a coaching hub with playbook adherence scoring against MEDDIC, MEDDPICC, BANT, SPIN, or custom frameworks, AI scorecards, objection-handling analysis, and speaker analytics covering talk-to-listen ratio, monologue length, filler words, and tone and pace. That is a genuine edge over Otter for a sales org that wants coaching without an Enterprise negotiation.
Note what both share, though: the analytics are team infrastructure. They live in manager dashboards, they score reps, and the audience is whoever runs the workspace. Neither product coaches an individual privately on their own communication.
Privacy, data residency, and AI training
The privacy gap between these two is wider than most head-to-heads admit.
Otter trains its AI models on de-identified customer conversations, and this is on by default rather than opt-in. A class action filed in August 2025 (Brewer v. Otter.ai) challenges that practice along with how OtterPilot handles recording consent; the case was still moving through motions in 2026. Otter is SOC 2 certified, US-based, and offers HIPAA support as an Enterprise add-on, which tl;dv cannot match.
tl;dv keeps all of its data centers in Europe, offers a choice of EU or US AI hosting, and states that customer data is not used to train AI models, with anonymized segments processed by Anthropic. It is SOC 2 certified, GDPR-focused, and claims EU AI Act compliance. It offers no HIPAA or BAA at all.
The decision rule is almost geographic. A European company with GDPR obligations has an easy case for tl;dv. A US healthcare or health-adjacent org can only use Otter, and only on Enterprise. Anyone uneasy about default AI training on their conversations has a concrete reason to lean tl;dv.
A different option if the meetings are about you
Everything above assumes the buyer is a team that needs shared notes. If what brought you here is your own performance, how you ran the demo, how the interview went, how often you say "um", neither tool addresses it. Otter's coaching requires an Enterprise contract and reports to sales managers. tl;dv's filler-word and playbook analytics require Business and likewise exist so a manager can review reps. In both, the person being scored is not the customer.
Work Coach flips that. It is a desktop app for Mac (macOS 15+) and Windows 11 that records your meetings locally, with no bot in the call and nothing visible to anyone else, then coaches only you. It classifies each meeting and your role in it, then scores what matters for that role: STAR answer quality if you are interviewing, discovery depth if you are selling, psychological safety if you are running a 1:1. A deterministic counter tracks your filler words per minute and plays each one back. Voice delivery analysis scores the audio of your highest-stakes moments on pitch, pace, pauses, projection, and tone. A practice mode lets you rerun a hard conversation as live voice roleplay generated from the real meeting.
It never scores your colleagues, only you. There is no team workspace, no admin console, and no manager view; the privacy policy commits in writing that your employer never sees any of it. It costs $50 a month after a two-week free trial with no credit card, priced as coaching (against an executive coach at $5,000 a month) rather than as a note-taker. And since it can import transcripts, it runs happily alongside whichever of Otter or tl;dv your team already pays for.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better, Otter or tl;dv?
It depends on what you need most. Otter wins on transcription pedigree, live transcripts you can read during the call, and price, since Pro costs $8.33 a month billed annually against tl;dv's $18. tl;dv wins on free recording volume (unlimited recordings against Otter's 300 minutes a month), EU data hosting, and sales coaching that starts on its $29 Business plan instead of an Enterprise contract. US teams in regulated industries should note that only Otter offers HIPAA support, and only on Enterprise.
Is the tl;dv free plan really unlimited?
Partly. Recording and transcription are unlimited (with a soft cap of 40 web recordings a week), which is far more generous than Otter's 300 minutes a month. The catches: free recordings auto-delete after roughly three months, and AI meeting notes are limited to about 10 meetings, after which you get raw transcripts without summaries. So the free plan is unlimited for capture, not for AI notes or long-term storage.
Does Otter or tl;dv train AI on my conversations?
Otter trains its models on de-identified customer conversations by default rather than asking users to opt in, and a class action filed in 2025 challenges that practice along with how its bot handles recording consent. tl;dv states that no customer data is used to train AI models, and that anonymized segments are processed by Anthropic under its partnership. If training policy is your deciding factor, tl;dv has the cleaner default.
Which has better coaching for sales teams?
tl;dv, mostly on price. Its Business plan at $29 per seat a month includes a coaching hub with playbook adherence scoring against MEDDIC, BANT, SPIN, or custom frameworks, AI scorecards, objection handling analysis, and speaker analytics like talk-to-listen ratio and filler words. Otter's equivalent, the Sales Agent, requires an Enterprise contract with custom pricing. In both products these dashboards are designed for managers reviewing reps, not for private self-coaching.
Is there an alternative that coaches me instead of my team?
Yes. Work Coach is a desktop app for Mac and Windows that records your meetings locally with no bot, then coaches only you: role-aware coaching scores, filler words per minute with audio playback, voice delivery analysis, and practice roleplay based on your real meetings. It never scores your colleagues and is never visible to your employer. It costs $50 a month after a two-week free trial, and it can sit alongside Otter or tl;dv if your team already uses one of them for notes.
The notes go to the team. The coaching goes to you.
Work Coach records locally, no bot, and shows you the moments worth fixing. First coaching feedback from your very next meeting.
